Weekly Quick Hits - August 21
Brief reviews of media I've spent time with this week
Each week, I’m going to send out a list of entertainment I’ve spent time with. Stuff I’ve seen, read, played, listened to, etc. These may be things I recommend or that I just want to share. Let’s go!
Watching
“Under the Queen’s Umbrella” episodes 9-16
My thoughts: I loved this show so much, I’ve decided to write up a full review. Look out for that soon! This series is great.
Where to watch: Netflix
“The Devil’s Hour” full series
My thoughts: I started this series taking notes and ready to write out a full reaction. But then it got…bad. If it ends up being only one season, I think the writers must have received the “cancelled” call halfway through the 5th episode. Because that ending…woof. (And it’s too bad, because I love a dark Peter Capaldi.)
Where to watch: Amazon
“Invincible” episodes 1 and 2
My thoughts: Two episodes in, and it’s as good as I expected. (My first knowledge of this show came from Overly Sarcastic Productions, check them out!) I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say this show is gore-y. Not for the faint-hearted, but very much for the superhero fanatics.
Where to watch: Amazon
“The Portable Door”
My thoughts: A good family movie night choice. The cast is fantastic, probably better than the script deserved. I feel like the book might be better. I’d recommend watching this one if you have kids, want a light movie night, or just like the cast/premise!
Where to watch: Amazon
Reading
“No One Gets Out Alive” by Adam Neville
My thoughts: I love love love it. I stay up late reading this one, both because it’s terrifying and because I want to see what happens next. I chose this book based on enjoying the movie adaptation. If you’ve seen the movie, it’s a good adaptation, but definitely not the same. I can’t wait to see how the book ends.
My edition: 2016
Listening
“The Teenhigh Saga: Break-in Wrong: Part 1” Dungeons and Daddies, season 2, episode 40
My thoughts: If you’re into Dungeons & Dragons, I recommend starting this podcast from season 1, episode 1 because it is a great show. The hosts are professional writers, and they are hilarious, and the story is genuinely moving. But if you’re a D&D rules lawyer, they may drive you insane.
Where to listen: online
“Tony Hawk” Joy, a Podcast. Hosted by Craig Ferguson
My thoughts: If you miss having Craig Ferguson host “The Late, Late Show,” then this is the podcast for you. Ferguson is one of the greatest celebrity interviewers and one of my favorite comedians. His interview with Tony Hawk is entertaining and informative!
Where to listen: iHeart
Playing
“Children of Morta”
My thoughts: Another game I’m playing for the second time and loving. “Children of Morta” is a rogue-like game (multi-player optional), all about making your way through dungeons, collecting power-ups and lore secrets. The story is surprising, and the art is gorgeous.
