Weekly Quick Hits
It's amazing how long the list gets when you don't write for a few weeks.
Read
Why Kids Need Summer Camp
The thesis is well thought out and explained. An interesting topic that I don’t see discussed often.
What Monks Know About Focus
I enjoyed his assessment both of the book and his response to Hanania’s argument. Miller is skilled at summarizing books while leaving enough unsaid to make you want to read them.
The Palace of Illusions, Chitra Divakaruni
I really enjoyed this retelling of Panchaali’s journey in the Mahabharat. I wasn’t aware of the story prior, and it makes me want to know more about the legends.
Watch
Monk | Netflix
A classic, feel-good detective show, perfect for relaxing or background viewing.
Hope Street | BritBox
A new mystery series I need to get back to, following a small-town police squad in Ireland.
Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy | BritBox
An Agatha Christie adaptation that I sadly cannot recommend. The production is slick, and the acting is solid, but the show wanted to add social commentary that isn’t suited to the original story.
Hilda, season 3 | Netflix
A kids’ show with a lot of heart. Great for when you need something light with funny characters and nice little life lessons. Plus, wonderful allusions to mythological creatures.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine | Netflix
Another classic show come to Netflix. A humorous look at police life in the big city, with plenty of oddball characters and meme-able moments.
Escaping Twin Flames | Netflix
Did you know that online cult activity skyrocketed during the pandemic? I sure didn’t. Learn about the group that promises true love, even if they have to encourage you to change genders to get it.
The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping | Netflix
A woman recounts her time in a controversial program that claimed to help troublesome children. I couldn’t get into this one because the director is also the show’s main witness. While she has the right to tell her own story, it felt more autobiographical than documentarian.
Play
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... | SQUARE ENIX
After years of loving NieR Automata, I finally played its predecessor. Luckily it became a cult hit because Automata is definitely the superior of the two games. But if you loved Automata, Replicant is worth playing to pick up on additional easter eggs and storylines.
